Thank you for writing to express your concern about recent Israeli military action against naval vessels attempting to deliver goods to the Gaza Strip. I appreciate you informing me of your views on this matter and welcome the opportunity to respond.
Please know that I understand you have concerns about this incident, which marks another low point in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel's forced isolation of Gaza, along with Hamas' refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist, are the roots of this tense situation. It is important to recognize the fact that Israel imposed a blockade in response to countless unprovoked rocket attacks by forces operating with free reign in Gaza. However, Israel has reassessed the effects of the blockade, and I welcome Israel's announcement that it will loosen restrictions on humanitarian assistance and construction materials for Gaza and publish a clear list of prohibited military items.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has also announced the creation of an inquiry with international observers to look into this tragic incident. I believe this inquiry should be impartial and I look forward to its conclusions.
This latest tragedy is just another reminder of the fact that a two-state peace agreement is imperative if we hope to avoid the further escalation of violence in this region. One thing is certain: peace is not attainable until both Israeli and Palestinian leaders are willing to sit down at the same table and settle their differences diplomatically. I urge all parties to remain committed to the proximity talks launched with U.S. Middle East Envoy George Mitchell, and to transition to direct talks as soon as possible.
Be assured that I continue to monitor this situation closely, and will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate have a chance to discuss this matter in relation to foreign policy.
Again, thank you for writing. I hope that you will continue to write on matters of importance to you. Should you have any further comments or questions, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.
Sincerely yours,
